A lot of things make a burger worthy of a five-star review. The bun should be fresh and housemade, the toppings need to be just the way you like them, and the patty must be cooked to perfection. San Francisco’s major food scene has this down right – the burgers in this city could satisfy almost anybody’s appetite. These are ten of the many local favorites that will make you a gourmet burger unlike anything from regular fast food joints.

1. Super Duper Burgers

Super Duper serves up their gourmet burgers at many locations across the Bay Area. And like any good burger joint, they also make crispy fries and shakes to pair with.

They offer veggie burgers for the non-meat eaters, plus breakfast options including sandwiches, and fresh donuts dusted in cinnamon sugar or a chocolate glaze. Take a look at their full menu.

2. Big Chef Tom’s Belly Burgers

Founder of this place “Big Chef Tom” is actually Tom Pizzica, a runner-up on The Next Food Network Star and former host of Outrageous Food. Since leaving his TV show behind, he’s been serving up gourmet pork belly burgers and house-cut fries here in SoMa.

You can choose between their specialty burgers on the menu (we recommend the Truck Stop, with white American cheddar, secret sauce, sauteed onions and lettuce) – or just create your own by picking out the patty and toppings you know and love. Check out their menu on their website.

3. Roam Artisan Burgers

What makes Roam so special is their focus on keeping ingredients as fresh as possible. The pasture-to-plate restaurant is dedicated to only using 100% grass-fed beef patties, free-range turkey, all-natural bison and an organic veggie burger.

Roam serves their quality burgers, sides, and shakes at two locations in SF (on Union St and Fillmore), plus another in Lafayette. For directions and their full menu, take a look at their website.

4. Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers

In Lower Nob Hill, Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers may look small and unassuming, but they will not disappoint inside. The handcrafted burgers sit between buns that are locally baked at Sciambra-Passini French Bakery in Napa.

Their burgers pair perfectly with the crispy fries and onion rings. When you stop by for lunch, keep in mind they’re cash only. You can view their menu & order online here.

5. 4505 Burgers & BBQ

4505 Burgers & BBQ combines three of our favorite things: burgers, beer and BBQ. The saucy brisket on their menu may be tempting, but you’ve got to get a taste of their Grass Fed Cheeseburger. It’s made on a buttery, griddled sesame & scallion bun, with a quarter pound beef patty and lettuce, onion, Gruyere cheese, and secret sauce.

They mostly serve BBQ, but vegetarians are welcome too. They also make tasty Grits & Egg Vegetarian Sandwiches, grilled cheese, large salads, and classic root beer floats to top it all off. Find them on Facebook here.

6. Gotts Roadside

It wouldn’t be right to compile a list of SF’s best burgers without mentioning Gott’s Roadside. They have four locations across the area, including ones in San Francisco (in the Ferry Building Marketplace), St. Helena, Napa and Palo Alto.

The local favorite has an extensive menu with more than just cheeseburgers. They also serve hot dogs, onion rings, creamy hand-spun shakes, and dishes like crispy Ahi Poke tacos and Chinese chicken salad – all with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Check out their website.

7. Jenny’s Burger

Jenny’s is a tiny, quaint burger joint, sandwiched between two other businesses in the Inner Sunset neighborhood. It may be small with only a few tables and chairs, but they make up for the atmosphere in the quality of their burgers and fries.

They also have a condiment bar where you can add all of your favorite toppings. Pair your flame-grilled burger with a side of their warm Chili Cheese Fries (pictured above). You’ll be glad you did!

8. Hall of Flame Burgers

With a name like “Hall of Flame”, how could you not want to stop in this place near SFSU? They know what they’re doing when it comes to making burgers, fries, tacos and sandwiches. The joint has more of a sports theme, with TVs where you can catch the game and cool memorabilia adorning the walls.

Our recommendation? Try pairing their Avocado Cheese Burger with some Sweet Potato Waffle Cut Fries. (But you can take a look at their full menu here.)

9. Causwells

Causwells serves an Americana burger that was even named as one of Thrillist’s favorite burgers in the country. It’s made with two thick patties, melted American cheese,  a house-made secret sauce and pickles on a Petit Pain bun.

It’s a great place for lunch or dinner in the Marina. They have outdoor seating available with heated lamps, and an extensive beer & wine list to pair with your burger and fries. Check out their full menu on their website.

10. WesBurger ‘N’ More

WesBurger serves burgers and more in a retro ’70s diner setting, complete with a jukebox and all. If someone in your group’s not feeling like a burger, they have many other creative options like a Fried Chicken Burrito and Portabella Rueben.

They also go above and beyond on the sides to pair with your burger. Choose between Mac & Cheese, Deluxe Tots, Potato Salad and Brisket Beans. (You can see their full menu here.)

Yum! Just thinking about these places is making me hungry. Where are some of your favorite restaurants around San Francisco to get a burger?
